Suspect you were unable to see the 'star' because of the small stipe (stem) between the spherical spore bearing section and that star like structure seen in Geastrum species. Not all that unusual for the rays of the star to curl back and under so not so easily seen.
This species has a distinctive beak-like structure through which to spores exit the fungus. as seen in your very clear image.
